We all want to do our bit to help create a better world. That's wonderful. But what if we become so enthusiastic that it affects our judgement and, in the very act of trying to defend what we perceive to be right, we end up doing something inexcusably wrong? How can doing a bad thing for a good cause, make that bad thing so much as one iota less bad? It is very important to follow your highest code of personal ethics now, regardless of the pressure or temptation to justify a dodgy compromise.

'I'd like to teach the world to sing, in perfect harmony.' So sang The New Seekers back in the 70s with their song of hope and peace, of universal love, trust and forgiveness, and strangers stopping to smile at one another in the street. It became an enormous hit, not just because the tune was so catchy but because the sentiment struck such a chord. We wanted it then, we still secretly want it now. We might yet get it. But not by chasing rainbows indiscriminately. Some dreams today are probably best kept in dreamland.

Your Week Ahead: They say, 'There's no rest for the wicked.' The good don't exactly get to put their feet up, either. Indeed, they often have to expend a lot more energy. They can't, for example, go around taking lots of naughty shortcuts. There are many ways now in which, if you were a lesser person, you could cheat your way out of a stressful situation. You could say whatever might get you off the hook or do whatever would be most convenient. But you're going to be noble. And ultimately, that's going to bring you more peace.
