Back in the days of semaphore and smoke signals, conveying even the shortest, simplest, message took great effort and concentration. Every letter in every word had to be spelt out carefully. In these modern times where folk fire off texts and emails in moments, communication is much quicker. But is it any less prone to misunderstanding? There is a lot to be said for stopping and thinking before saying anything, to anyone, ever. And, just as there is a lot to be said for not saying a lot - there is a lot to be said now, for listening very carefully.

Words, for all that they have great potential power, hardly do justice to many profound emotions. There are some feelings that it is simply impossible to describe. The best that even the greatest writer can hope for is to convey a slight sense of meaning through metaphor and analogy. And if even poets struggle as they pass through poetic territory, how are the rest of us supposed to articulate vital, personal, points. Someone is having difficulty saying something. Try to make an allowance for this and to empathise.

Every so often, I meet 'New Age healers' who describe themselves as 'light workers'. I'm always just a little suspicious. If light workers exist, presumably, there must be 'dark workers' too. What do such people call themselves? Wouldn't a dark worker be tempted to disguise themselves as a light worker? And how can even the most sincere light worker be sure that all their deeds and thoughts are genuinely full of light? Be wary, this weekend, of the possibility of doing the most harm in the very process of striving to do the most good.
