一度、記事にしたのですが、ちょっとしたバックグラウンドが分かったので、再度、記事にしました。
「Hard To Say I'm Sorry（邦題：素直になれなく
て）」が全米No.1を獲得して35周年。
1967年結成のシカゴ。コロンビアよりデビューし数々のヒットを出し、1982年にワーナーに移籍。「Hard To Say I'm Sorry」は移籍第1弾シングル。
82年5月にアルバムより先行してシングルがリリースされると、じわりじわりとチャートを上昇。9/11付け全米HOT100チャートで1位を獲得、2週続けて1位となりました。前作が思うような結果を残せず、新しいレーベルに移り心機一転、デヴィッド・フォスターをプロデューサー、ソングライターに迎え、バンドのサウンドの方向性そのものにも大胆なメスを入れ制作されました。
その目論見は大成功し、全く新しいシカゴのサウンドが完成しますが、同時に、80年代のミュージック・シーンの全体にも大きな影響を与え、デヴィッド・フォスターはプロデューサーとして引っ張りだことなっていきます。
シカゴは幾多のメンバーチェンジを経ながら現在も活動中。昨年は来日公演も行っています。今週ピックアップしたのは、そんなシカゴの歴史をコンパクトに俯瞰できるイギリス編集のベスト盤。アルバムヴァージョンでは「Get Away」とメドレーになっている「Hard To Say I'm Sorry」が、このベストでは「Get Away」の前でフェードアウトするシングル・ヴァージョンより12秒長いヴァージョンが収録されています。
