The Mists of Avalon by Marrion Zimmer Bradley is one dense novel. (Trill of exultation.) The Mists of Avalon, which I somehow managed not to read until two or three years ago, has a very peculiar place in my heart. And, surprisingly, it is not the feminist manifesto it had been rumored to be. Marion Zimmer Bradley's The Mists of Avalon is absolutely huge, when it comes to feminist retellings of legends, giving voice and dignity to the oft-maligned Morgaine le Fay. I read it to my family when we travelled Australia and I read bits of it every so often just to get a fix. The values of Morgaine's world, both christian and pagan, take center stage in this week's chapters. In Celtic mythology, Avalon was an earthly paradise known as a land of plenty where eternal spring, health, and harmony reigned.
