菟原処女は、哀れな女。その昔 菟原（現在の兵庫県の一地域）に住んでいた乙女の話。
二人の男に 求愛され、そのどちらも選ぶことができずに苦しんだ挙句入水自殺してしまう。
それを知ったその男二人も 刺し違えてなくなるという悲劇。
能の「求塚｝では、女は死んでも成仏できずに 毎日毎日、鉄でできた大きな鳥に、脳みそをつつかれ苦しみ続ける姿が
描かれています。
何とも 不条理な話と思いませんか？
女はそれほどの罪を犯したのだろうか……。
自殺し、そののち男たちの命も失うことになったとはいえ、純粋さが故の代償にしては 残酷すぎると思う。
