URALOCHKA EKATERINBURG AND RC CANNES IN FINAL
PILA, Poland, 15 March 2003 - Uralochka EKATERINBURG of Russia and RC CANNES of France will play Sunday’s final of the Women’s Indesit European Champions’ League. In Saturday’s action, the Russian team upset Italian champion Foppapedretti BERGAMO (3-1) in this competition with 100,000 Euro price money. In the second semifinal, defending champion RC CANNES defeated the Italian team of Volley MODENA after five spectacular sets (3-2), in the Mosir Hall of Pila, Poland.
RC CANNES had big difficulties to defeat Volley MODENA. Although the French team won the previous edition of the Indesit European Champions’ League, the Italian squad was the favorite to win this semifinal clash. RC CANNES claimed the first two sets, thanks to concentrated play at the end of each set. Middle blocker Victoria Ravva was unstoppable, while the Dutch wing spiker Erna Brinkman and libero Alexandra Fomina make great defense actions. After losing the first two sets, Volley MODENA came back. German star Angelina Grun started to make fewer errors and she took her team into a fifth set tiebreaker. Although RC CANNES was leading from the beginning of the fifth set, Volley MODENA had its first match point at 14-13. After spoiling a second opportunity to clinch the match, the Italian team faced a match point of RC CANNES. It was the French player Katerina Buckova who brought RC CANNES the 3-2 victory thanks to a great block at 16-15. RC CANNES players Victoria Ravva was the best player of the match. She scored 28 points, but was not the leading scorer. Angelina Grun of Volley MODENA made 31 points in this match.

In earlier Saturday's action, Uralochka EKATERINBURG played a tremendous match against Foppapedretti BERGAMO, runner-up of the previous edition of the Indesit European Champions' League. The Russian team, coached by the famous Nikolai KARPOL, made a flying start and took the first two sets easily. Ekaterina Gamova and captain Elizaveta Tichtchenko were unstoppable. Foppapedretti BERGAMO came back in the third set, but Uralochka EKATERINBURG was simply the best and claimed the 3-1 victory. "We played very concentrated", Tichtchenko said. "We definitely wanted to win this match. Winning the first two sets was the key to our victory." Karpol could only agree with his captain. "My players played very well, especially in the first two sets."
