CANNES, ZURICH AND PESARO BOOK SECOND VICTORY
Last edition’s Champions’ League Final Four host and vice champion RC CANNES experienced no difficulties booking a straight-set victory facing the Turks from Vakifbank Gunes S. ISTANBUL, thus maintaining number one spot ahead of Dinamo MOSCOW. Swiss Volero ZURICH, first-time IECL participant, has claimed its second victory in Pool B after having beaten Italian JESI away last week. This time, the team coached by Miroslav Aksentievic and Stav Jacobi were supported by their home fans dominating the Dutch DELA Martinus AMSTELVEEN convincingly from the end of the first set onwards - even without their captain Robyn Ah Mow Santos who injured herself during Monday’s training. “It was difficult not to play”, the US-American said, “I don’t like sitting on the bench.” Top scorer was Belgian Virginie de Carne, who transferred from TENERIFE to ZURICH this season, with 20 points. “After playing so much since summer for the preparation of the World Championship in Japan we are not in a good shape”, recognised AMSTELVEEN’s head coach Avital Selinger, “I’m afraid the players will be very disappointed after this defeat but we need to climb back up to the top.” Italian Scavolini PESARO beat Turkish Eczacibasi ISTANBUL 3:1 to take over the lead in Pool C. Thanks to Martina Guiggi and Kinga Maculewicz, Scavolini's block was always effective with Ivana Djerisilo being the sole player to be able to pass the Italian block. “We played well during the first and second set but we gave away the third because we lost concentration", stated PESARO head coach Ze Roberto, "I'm always a little worried when it seems too easy. We should have won in three sets." Turkish head coach Marco Aurelio Motta declared: "So far this was probably our best match of the season but Scavolini is the best team of the pool." Ivana Djerisilo was the best scorer with 30 points. On Italian side Sheilla Tavares de Castro was elected MVP with 17 points and a 53% attack rate. "We didn't play very well but our team is training very hard because our goal is to reach the Final Four", the Brazilian added.
