MOSCOW WINS TIEBREAK BATTLE AT HOME
MOSCOW was trailing 1:2 at home against Hotel Cantur LAS PALMAS from Gran Canaria, but came back winning the next two sets with Ekaterina Gamova scoring a total of 24 points. On Spanish side, Brazilians Daniela Lanner (20) and Rosangela Correia do Nascimento (19) booked most points. "We don't have such strong opponents in the Russian Championship", stated MOSCOW's head coach Dmitry Fomin after the match. Turkish Vakifbank Gunes S. ISTANBUL had no luck at home when they confronted Vini Monteschiavo JESI. 2’185 spectators came to watch their team lose 1:3 against a strong Italian side led by Simona Rinieri (17 points) and captain Elisa Togut (12 points). Turkish captain Aysun Ozbek was a little disappointed, stating: “We didn’t play well. Some of our players are injured.” The Italians, whose aim is winning the Italian as well as the European Cup, now have a strong backing before they meet their opponents from ISTANBUL at home with a positive outlook on reaching the second playoff round. The other Turkish team from Istanbul, i.e. Eczacibasi ISTANBUL, weren't successful either when they visited DELA Martinus AMSTELVEEN in the Netherlands. Trailing 0:2, the Turks took the lead in the third set but couldn’t maintain it, so the Dutch celebrated a straight-set victory, opening the door to the six-team playoff round. "We are maturing with every match", commented home head coach Avital Selinger, "We don't get nervous when we make a mistake and keep on fighting for every point."
