FOUR TEAMS SURE IN SIX-TEAM PLAYOFF ROUND
2004/05 titleholder Foppapedretti BERGAMO beat Azerrail BAKU convincingly twice in straight sets, experiencing little resistance. The closest set was the final third set in the second match away in Baku which the Italians claimed 26-24. DELA Martinus AMSTELVEEN, the Dutch who just managed to qualify for the playoff stage finishing as best fourth ranked team of the League Round, needed to win one more set against Eczacibasi ISTANBUL after they had defeated the Turks 3:0 the week before. In the return match in Istanbul, AMSTELVEEN got off to a better start (8-3, 16-12), finally managing to claim the first set and secure their place in the six-team playoff stage. “My players weren’t able to stand the pressure and committed mistakes in the beginning of the first set”, stated ISTANBUL’s head coach Marco Aurelio Motta, “We were no longer able to catch the Dutch lead and after the first set was lost, we lost all hope.” Following a first close tiebreaker against Hotel Cantur LAS PALMAS, the Russians from Dinamo MOSCOW claimed the away match in Gran Canaria 3:0, securing their place in the six-team playoff round, where they will now meet DELA Martinus AMSTELVEEN. The fourth winner was Spar TENERIFE Marichal who defeated Scavolini PESARO for the second time. The two remaining matches will be played on Thursday between Winiary KALISZ (POL) vs. RC CANNES (FRA) and Vini Monteschiavo JESI (ITA) vs. Vakifbank Gunes S. ISTANBUL (TUR).
