This is the postcard I bought ata ADMT Tokyo, where I visited the commercial exhibition of the Shouwa period. The exhibition was fantastic and impressive, So many cimmercial items were shown as well as the films. It is really hard to believe that the cmmercials 60 years ago (ca. 1960) can display a average of 90 seconds each. While the title of "the commercial of the Shouwa period", there are many ancient Edo paintings and documents in the exhibition and the ADMT also preserves many items of the Edo period-- the era of the massively printed commercial works in Japan. That is why this late-Edo work was as a postcard in print in the museum shop.
I'm recently reading a book about the art works of the Edo, a peroiod of 250 years from the 16th century to the 18th century. To read this book is one of my plans because I'm interesting in the interchange between Chinese and Japanese culture. Before I construct or judge any phenomena, I need to enhance the knowkedge of both the countries. And so far, the Edo period impress me an conspicuous urban and merchant culture. Not only the motifs of aristocrats or court culture can be involved in Art works, but the daily lives of all the citizen. It is a vibrant era because so many different cultures, including the court in Kyoto, the Shougun and Samurai, the foreign Niderland culture, the indigenized Chinese culture more than 1000 years ago, and the recent one from China, were impacting each other. The hierarchy of arts are broadening and the content are becoming more abundant. I expect what I will read next.
Then, the next step is reading some books describing the section of Chinese culture in almost the same or earlier periods. It does help me to understand background and what happened to the East Asia during the time. What a magical area of East Asia, a region of busy culture interchanges and always mutates and diverges.
