Vol.74 Spring/Summer 2011 NY Collection 2
More than 300 designers from around the world are participating
in New York, Spring/Summer 2011 Collections.
There are a variety of styles from top brands recognized internationally,
to young designers who are trying to establish themselves.
Let me introduce two unique designers.
John Patrick, is making clothing using natural materials in distinctive
ways, under the label Organic by John Patrick.
I wrote about his garments featured in the “Eco-Fashion: Going Green”,
exhibition on view until November 13, 2010 at The Museum at FIT.

The clothes were a delicate blouse and skirt of organic cotton,
hand painted in floral designs from his 2008 collection.
Although John Patrick lives in a small town along the Hudson River,
north of New York, when he works in NY he stays in the Jane Hotel
in Manhattan, which was known as a bohemian hangout
in the 80’s. (www.thejanenyc.com )
He talked with great passion about his beautiful clothes made of natural
material as we sat in the hotel’s café.
“Organic is my life,” John said with enthusiasm.
“Because it has become difficult to present something beautiful and natural,
I travel the world seeking new ways to accomplish my goal.
I love beautiful things, innovation and traveling, and
then expressing them through fashion,” he explained.
His passion is fully expressed in his Spring/Summer 2011 collection.
His models looked like they were standing on the porch of a summer
house relaxing, instead of the usual fashion show format.
A camel trench coat, jacket and pencil skirt are in natural, washed linen which
has a cool, clean texture that feels good next to the skin on warm days.
His floral print organic cotton dress is full of charming nostalgia for
our childhood. All women love such a dress.
Meghan Walsh, designer of Blank Silk, is a painter, whose first collection
was inspired by her travel in India. (www.mwstudionyc.com )
Meghan studied painting and graphic design in India and New York,
where she also learned couture techniques.
Her collection is a sophisticated mix of traditional Indian women’s
saris and the classic American mood of the 20’s and 30’s.
The flowing silk transparent dresses are very elegant.
Meghan wears one of her own black dresses and blends in with her models.
The show was held in a penthouse which has high ceilings,
large windows and a luxurious bathroom, overlooking the Hudson River.
Her dresses look very much at home
in this glamorous penthouse setting.
We would too, if we were wearing one of her dresses and living there!
