バロック音楽を代表する人物。
即興演奏の大家。
西洋音楽の基礎を構築した作曲家であり、「音楽の父」と称された。

BWV140 カンタータ「目覚めよと呼ぶ声あり」
BWV244 マタイ受難曲
BWV565 トッカータとフーガ ニ短調
BWV988 ゴルトベルク変奏曲
BWV1007-1012 無伴奏チェロ組曲
BWV1046-1051 ブランデンブルク協奏曲
BWV1067-1070 管弦楽組曲（有名な「G線上のアリア」は第3番のアリアのアレンジ）
BWV1080 フーガの技法
1723年作曲、 『主よ、人の望みの喜びよ』
教会カンタータ『心と口と行いと生活で』(BWV147)の終曲のコラール「イエスは変わらざるわが喜び」(Jesus bleibet meine Freude)の、
英語によるタイトル"Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring"に基づくタイトルである。
