I don't know why — but I always end up writing my diary (and posting to the blog) in the middle of the night. My night usually shifts --- depending on the amount of writing and studying I do while I'm awake. Here, it's about 5am and I am sitting at the desk, in my room, having a little cereal and some juice. I guess -- here -- it's a break from the festivities. Festivities is a loosely defined, and often ironic term. People, hate being alone for Christmas (one of the reasons behind the Christmas haters). Ironically, the Christmas haters are not all lonely -- they are (usually) from large families and hate the crowds, in the home. While the feasts are usually -- festive -- fitting that many people into a single house for that long of a period usually results in some ruffled feathers.
The crowd usually splits, men and women, young and old. The age divide is typically around who can and cannot drink -- the special drinks (that you "need to be old enough to drink") . The gender divide is also (fairly) typical. The men are men, competition is typical -- along with some sport on tv. But this is where the typical male, leaves the west and become the Eastern man. The modern, western man, is the neo-apeman -- brawn and no brains. The eastern man, must hold his own in no holes barred verbal boxing. Around the table, supplied (by the women) with all manner of food, is the ancient Socratic symposium. The younger males jockey for approval. and position, among the veterans. The ranking is based on knowledge of any (and all topics) and more importantly -- your verbal skills. If you are easily offended, this is not the place for you. The verbal attack (the quality of the argument) must contain several elements, of which the two most basic; accuracy of statement, supported by a personal attack. Winning often depends on who you can convince (at the table) that you are right. Piss too many people off, with personal attacks (and little accuracy) you lose because you turn the table against you.
