I recently graduated from university this year, and I figured I'd write a little retrospective on how it was, what I wish I did differently, and what advice I'd give myself if I was talking to myself when I was in highschool.
So from the start university in Canada is a lot more self-directed. You choose which schools to apply to, you choose your major and the courses you take, you apply on your own, and so on. One of the differences that I felt going from highschool to University was one the change in course difficulty, highschool in comparison was much easier compared to university. In highschool I was able to maintain 90+ average without doing much studying, while in university I was putting in a lot of work to get B's.
You also schedule and select your own courses, and you're free to change majors or even change institutions anytime. This freedom is nice, but there's also a lot of potentials to make mistakes and pick courses that aren't that useful. In hindsight, I should have taken more useful courses rather then picking the easy ones, I think that would have helped develop my skills more and made getting an internship easier.
On the topic of internships, that's another really important part of university. I can't speak for all industries, but at least in Computer Science, because of how intensive the interview process is and how popular the major is, you absolutely need to focus on finding at least one internship while a student. Finding an internship is basically like learning how to find a job, write a resume and interview. Software development especially, the interview process is so technical and complicated, its worth interviewing for internships just to get that experience of being in that spot. Having that internship experience will also give you some relevant skills and projects to put on your resume, which helps significantly in finding a job.
Overall, just be smart, make friends with people that seem to know what they're doing, and remember the end goal, to find a job.
Despite the economic uncertainty and all the chaos that came with Covid, I somehow have managed to graduate, and start my career in my respective field of Software Development .
私は今年、大学を卒業したばかりなので、それがどのようなものだったのか、違うことをすればよかったと思うこと、高校生のときに自分に言い聞かせるならどのようなアドバイスをするかについて、少し振り返って書こうと思いました。
カナダの大学はもともとより自主的なものです。 どの学校に出願するかを選択し、
専攻と受講するコースを選択し、自分で出願するなどです。
高校から大学に行くことで私が感じた違いの 1 つはコースの難易度の変化で、
高校は大学に比べてはるかに簡単でした。
高校ではあまり勉強しなくても平均点90点以上を維持できましたが、
大学ではBを取るためにたくさんの努力をしました。
また、独自のコースをスケジュールして選択することもでき、
いつでも専攻を変更したり、教育機関を変更したりすることもできます。
この自由度は素晴らしいですが、間違いを犯したり、
あまり役に立たないコースを選択したりする可能性もたくさんあります。
今にして思えば、簡単なコースを選ぶのではなく、
もっと役立つコースを受講すべきでした。そうすれば、よりスキルが向上し、
インターンシップに応募しやすくなったと思います。
インターンシップについて言えば、これも大学の非常に重要な部分です。
すべての業界について話すことはできませんが、
少なくともコンピュータ サイエンスでは、面接プロセスが非常に集中的であり、
専攻が非常に人気があるため、学生の間に少なくとも 1 つのインターンシップを見つけることに絶対に注力する必要があります。
インターンシップを見つけることは、基本的に仕事の見つけ方、
履歴書の書き方、面接の仕方を学ぶことに似ています。
特にソフトウェア開発の面接プロセスは非常に技術的で複雑なので、
その現場に立つという経験を得るというだけでもインターンシップの面接を受ける価値はあります。
インターンシップの経験を積むことで、履歴書に記載できる関連スキルやプロジェクトも得られ、就職に大きく役立ちます。
全体として、賢く行動し、自分が何をしているかを知っていそうな人と友達になり、仕事を見つけるという最終目標を忘れないようにしましょう。
新型コロナウイルスに伴う経済的不確実性とあらゆる混乱にもかかわらず、
私はなんとか卒業し、ソフトウェア開発のそれぞれの分野で
キャリアをスタートすることができました。
