As we continue our series in how to make a new year, a new year, let’s explore two more idea allies that can make your future brighter. Today I submit to you Idea Five and Six. Here we go!
Idea Five is: Don’t Spread My Wealth – Spread My Work Ethic. Now I realize that tough things happen in life. Sometimes, through no fault of our own, we end up needing financial help. Thank God we live in a country where those in need can get help. But, other times, we just don’t want to work hard anymore. We check out and live off of church, government or others.
That’s too bad because it stops us from having the ‘new year’ we desire. Some become like the person who joined a health club. “I joined a health club last year, spent about $400. I haven’t lost a pound. Apparently you have to show up.” Right from the beginning of the Bible, God told man to go rule over and fill the earth. That means to go to work. The world may be your oyster but you still have to crack the shell. American President Theodore Roosevelt said: “There has never yet been a man in our history who led a life of ease whose name is worth remembering.” That is tough and mostly true.
Ben Franklin said, “I didn’t fail the test, I just found 100 ways to do it wrong.” Edgar Howe said: “Even if a farmer intends to loaf, he gets up in time to have an early start.” Hard work and perseverance eventually pay off, even if you have to start over again.
Idea Six is very closely related to Idea Five: Character is Like a Muscle, the More You Use It the Stronger It Gets. Do you realize that a muscle requires resistance to grow? Madison Sarratt said: “Today I’m going to give you two examinations, one on trigonometry and one in honesty. I hope you will pass them both, but if you must fail one, let it be trigonometry.” Why? Motivational speaker Zig Ziglar says: “The most important persuasion tool you have in your entire arsenal is integrity.”
Vision is where you want to go. Character is the power and perseverance to get and keep you there. Your new year requires character.
Let me close with several quotes by Dwight Moody. “If I take care of my character, my reputation will take care of me.” “Give me a man who says this one thing I do, and not those fifty things I dabble in.” “A good example is far better than a good precept.” “I have had more trouble with myself than with any other man.”
As the Bible says, the truth will set you free but it’s going to take God’s power and your will to do it. After all, you can’t change your character by getting a facelift!
