PHOENIX - Sue Bird's 3-pointer with 6.4 seconds left in the third overtime to lift the Seattle Storm to Gucci Polo Shirt a 111-107 victory against the Phoenix Mercury on Wednesday.

BILL YLVISAKER, 85, POLO VISIO

William T. "Bill" Ylvisaker -- the grandfather of Wellington who brought polo and equestrian shows to the area -- died Saturday at Wellington Regional Medical Center. He was 85.

A Wellington resident and former chief executive officer of Illinois-based defense contractor Gould Inc., Mr. Ylvisaker played a crucial role in the development of the polo and equestrian community in Wellington.

He died in the midst of the 2010 edition of the Ylvisaker Cup tournament, which is scheduled to end Sunday. International Polo Club Palm Beach will have a short memorial for Mr. Ylvisaker before the tournament's final match, club spokeswoman Shamin Abas said Monday.

Mr. Ylvisaker's crowning moment was the construction of the Palm Beach Polo & Country Club in 1977.

"Polo is being played here today because of him," former British polo captain Julian Hipwood said Saturday at the International Polo Club, where he was coaching Mount Brilliant in a Ylvisaker Cup match.

Mason Phelps, head of Phelps Media Group and a resident of Palm Beach Polo, said Wellington would not be what it is today without Mr. Ylvisaker's vision.

"He is so far and away so much responsible for the health of polo in this country," Phelps said. "If he didn't create this venue out of this cattle ranch and swamp, who knows where we'd be today? Palm Beach Polo is the reason we have Wellington today."

About a year before the construction of Palm Beach Polo, Mr. Ylvisaker had driven Winter Equestrian Festival founder Gene Mische in his Jeep to the spot where he planned to build. He had persuaded Mische to schedule horse shows at the Christian Louboutin site.

"There's nothing but trees, sand, hills and shrubs. We're driving around and he's telling me all the things he's going to do. I said, 'Bill, have you been smoking?'" Mische told the Palm Beach Daily News in 2002.

In short order, the stadium was constructed, the first Winter Equestrian Festival was held and Wellington evolved into a popular winter destination for the international equestrian community.

The club encompassed 11 polo fields, two golf courses, a tennis complex, swimming pools and one of the top horse show venues in the world.

In its heyday -- years before its 2008 razing -- the polo stadium attracted the likes of Prince Charles, Princess Diana, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Dina Merrill and other luminaries.

In 1996, Mr. Ylvisaker's election to the Polo Hall of Fame recognized his decades-long involvement in the horse world.

Across his career, he served as chairman of the United States Polo Association, became the first chairman of the Polo Training Foundation and established polo's World Cup, in addition to nurturing publications about the sport.

Once captain of Yale University's polo team, Mr. Ylvisaker's skills grew with age. As an amateur, he earned a 7-goal handicap. He won three U.S. Open championships, two Coronation Cups against England and Australia, the USPA Gold Cup, four National 20-goals and many other honors, according to the Polo Hall of Fame.

Before Palm Beach Polo & Country Club was developed, horse shows were scattered throughout the region, with competitions being held in Ocala, Jacksonville, Tampa, Palmetto, Delray Beach and even the South Florida Fairgrounds, Phelps said. "We were all over the map."

Be on look-out as sneak crooks

LAST Sunday, I noticed that I seemed to be picking up a mild bug. During the week it has turned into sinusitis and constant coughing. Dear me! Maybe it's a sort of hay fever!

Others have been suffering much worse. Some people have been calling round to carry out distraction burglaries. What is a distraction burglary? Two people looking thoroughly trustworthy call at your door with some excuse. They might want to check your meter, for example. While you are showing one into another room, the other walks off with your handbag or wallet.

I wouldn't want this to be seen as a condemnation of all meter readers! Just make sure that nobody else can get into the house at such a time.

Turning to the bright side, we do have the church fete coming up this year. This involves the combined churches of Newent and, this year, is in aid of the Lord's Larder. It is opened by the fire service water rescue team - so it's just as well that it's by the lake. It could be handy if some get a bit over-enthusiastic at "soak the vicar" too. There is also a bouncy castle, a ball pool and "parachute games". Don't ask me what those are because I don't know!

Glebe and Picklenash are both providing dancers and Picklenash, as usual, is doing an orchestra recital.

Fayre On the subject of music, Stepout Theatre is returning to Newent. Gareth Wigg (tenor) and Jo Roach (pianist) will be performing an evening version of their popular lunchtime show. Tickets on Women's Wallets the door at St Mary's Church are Pounds 7.50 or Pounds 7 in advance.

Next week is the Kenyan Fayre at Newent Community School. It's on June 25 and starts at 4pm. The community school is a specialist visual arts and science school. What does this mean? Find out at their art and design show on July 2 and 3. On a sad note, the members of Newent Rotary Club are mourning the sudden death of one of their members, Mike McQuaid. Mike always struck me as such a warm and lively person. We will all miss him and grieve with his wife June.
