丹頂鶴は、毎年、１１月～３月に日本に飛来しますが、数が減ってきたので１９３５年、天然記念物に指定されました、その後も、徐々に減ってきた為、１９５２年には、特別天然記念物にしていされました。
そんな中、１９６２年、北海道鶴居村に住む渡辺トメさんは、減っていく鶴を守ろうと、餌やりを始めました。
その後、伊藤良孝さん等、給餌をする人が増え, 行政も雑木林の木をきって、群生の場所や、給餌場を作るなどの努力もみのり、最近は鶴の飛来数も増え、今は、毎年，３００羽程が鶴居村に、飛来するそうです。、
この現象は世界でも珍しい事なので、国内外からの観光客が増えて、他の産業も活気ずき、村が豊か
になりました。
まさに、鶴の恩返し状態ですが、住民は、鶴に恩返ししたい気分と言っています。
The Tancho-Crane gives village vigor
Tancho- crane comes to To-hoku area in Japan every winter from
November to March.
In 1935 they had been specified as the natural treasure, because
of the species decreasing.
After then, they had continued reducing, so government specified them as the special natural treasure again in 1952.
But the decreasing went on.
In 1962 Ms. Watanabe Tome who lived Turui village started to feed the cranes to protect.
Later, Mr. Ito- Yositaka and some other people followed her to do
it and government also cut trees for cranes to live in flocks.
Nowadays , 300 cranes come every season, this is rare situation in the world, so many tourists come to Turui village from not all over Japan but also foreign countries.
As the result the village is getting vigorous.
Now villagers say “We are helped by cranes”
