The person who thinks "I can't believe it" is the most dangerous.
Many victims of romance scams are cautious or have common sense. That's the horror of this scam. When emotions move first, you usually overlook what you would notice.
The damage continues to grow
According to a statement from the National Police Agency, in 2024, there were 10,237 cases of social media investment and romance scams, with losses of 127.19 billion yen, a significant increase from the previous year, with the number of cases increasing by 166.2% and the amount of losses increasing by 179.4%.
Romance fraud losses in 2025 amounted to 55.22 billion yen, a 37.8% increase from the previous year, with most contacts being made through matching apps, and those in their 40〜60s accounting for three-quarters of the losses.
The numbers show that this is not "some people's problem." Matching apps were the most common tool that caused the damage, accounting for 30% of cases, while direct messaging accounted for approximately 90% of cases. People who use apps for matchmaking or lovemaking purposes are in the most vulnerable environment.
Three typical methods
①Dating scams (matching app type)
They suddenly match on a matching app and immediately show their affection. His profile picture shows him with a well-defined appearance, and his occupations include doctors, engineers, Japanese people living overseas, and investors, so he is often "set up in a way that makes him less likely to be scrutinized."
The conversation is intimate from the start, with early comments like, "I enjoy talking to you," and "I've never felt this way before." After a period of interaction, they often offer investments or side hustles under the guise of "building assets for the two of them's futures," and sometimes even make it appear as if their investment returns are increasing through a dedicated investment app.
②Honey trap type

Is it safe to have a human badge
A human badge indicates that a person is a "real, unique human account," but does not guarantee that the person is honest. The presence or absence of a badge is one of the factors used to determine whether something is bad, and it is important to use it in combination with traditional checking behavior.
What to do if you have already sent the money
Immediately contact the bank you are transferring the money to and request that they stop the transfer. Then, consult with the National Police Agency Cybercrime Consultation Center or your nearest police station. Be sure to preserve evidence (chat history and bank transfer details).
