IT looks like Kub Bread has found a new home, although it's a lot bigger and costlier than was originally envisioned.

Kub co-owner Ross Einfeld said Thursday he has reached a tentative deal to purchase a 13,000-square-foot building at 850 Erin St. for $800,000.

The building is about double the size he and his brother were seeking and cost $176,000 more than they had budgeted, Einfeld said. But it was either buy that or risk losing the remaining $240,000 of the $624,000 insurance settlement they received after their original bakery on Stella Avenue was destroyed by fire in 2008.

As reported earlier this month, the Einfelds had been given until the end of August to buy another building or they'd forfeit the rest of the insurance payout.

But after six months of intense searching, they'd been unable to find anything in the right size and price range. And when they did see something they liked, they were either outbid or it sold before they could make an offer.

Their real estate Womens Air Shox NZ agent -- Wayne Johnson of Royal LePage Dynamic Real Estate -- confirmed there has been a shortage of industrial buildings for sale in Winnipeg for about the last three years. And that's made it tough on buyers.

So with time running out, Einfeld said they decided last week to pay the extra money and buy the Erin Street building, which had first come to their attention about six months ago.

"Now we have a mortgage, and for the last 28 years we didn't have one. So that kind of sucks. But it was the only avenue that was left."

On the bright side, "it's a nice building and we're going to have a nice-looking store there," he said. "So hopefully it works out for us."

Einfeld said they expect the deal to close early next week and to take possession of the building on Sept. 22. He said they plan to open a retail store there as soon as possible, but it may be about a year before they start producing bread and other baked goods there.

In the meantime, the bakery will continue using the rental facility it has on Regent Avenue West until the lease runs out in 2012. By then, it should have all of its baking operations consolidated at the new location.
