さて、今週末は月曜のMemorial Day祝日
により、アメリカも久々の連休ですね
当ブログでも繰り返し！？お伝えしていますが、Memorial Day連休からミシガン州も”夏の始まり”となります
（例えば、ミシガン州内の有名避暑地リゾート、Traverse Cityなども”夏季営業”時間になったりするのが、この時期です
）
今回は、私も改めて”勉強”になったのですが、今朝のこちらの全米ニュース、、、
アメリカ人の半数以上が、”Memorial Dayを正しく認識していない！？” というニュースでした
ということで、アメリカ人のほとんどが正しく理解していないなら、日本人である私達がちゃんと理解していなくても仕方ない！？
とは思いつつも、、連休前のせっかくの機会ですので、上記と以下の記事引用の、Memorial Dayとは！？について、今回のブログ記事ではざっとまとめたいと思います

The meaning of Memorial Day vs. Veterans Day （メモリアルデーとベテランズデーの意味）
Memorial Day is intended to remember those who died while serving / This holiday honors military personnel who died in service of their country.
メモリアルデー：国のためのサービス（戦争以外も含め）の為に、亡くなった人達を想う、感謝する日
Veterans Day is to honor the service of people who have worn the uniforms of the armed forces / This holiday honors everyone who has served in the military, whether or not they served in wartime or died in battle.
ベテランズデー：国のために、いわゆる”Five armed forces"（The Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force and Coast Guard ）に属してサービスしている（していた）人達（戦争でサービスの有無は問わず）に対して敬い、感謝をする日
以上が
Memorial DayとVeterans Dayとの端的な違いになり、他の違いは以下になります：
When Memorial Day and Veterans Day are observed（日付）
- Memorial Day: The last Monday of May（5月の最終月曜日）
- Veterans Day: Nov. 11 of each year（11月11日）
How Memorial Day and Veterans Day are observed（どのように過ごす日なのか）
- Memorial Day: Many people visit cemeteries and memorials, while volunteers often decorate the graves at national cemeteries with American flags, placing one on each grave. People may run to the store and buy Memorial Day decorations for their homes, and many towns hold annual parades as well. A national moment of remembrance takes place at 3 p.m. local time.（セメタリー/墓地や記念碑を訪れ、国立セメタリーではアメリカ国旗や多くの記念式典が執り行われ、街によってはパレードなどの行事も行われる。国としての黙祷は各地午後3時となる）
- Veterans Day: Normally, towns hold parades, churches schedule special services and families—military families and others—come together to thank living veterans for their service and remember all who have served.（各地でパレードや、教会などでVeteransや、その家族に対して様々なサービスが実施される）
How Memorial Day and Veterans Day originated（発祥について）
- Memorial Day: This holiday was first celebrated a year after the end of the Civil War, which claimed more lives than any other conflict in U.S. history and required the establishment of the nation’s first national cemeteries. Until 1971, the holiday was known as “Decoration Day” in reference to the decoration of graves.（Civil Warの終わりに祝日となったのが始まり。1971年までDecoration Dayで、その後Memorial Dayと改名）
- Veterans Day: Have you ever wondered why Veterans Day is celebrated on Nov. 11.? Well, the first celebration was on Nov. 11, 1919, to commemorate the end of World War I. Hostilities formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. Until 1954, Veterans Day was known as Armistice Day.（世界第一次大戦後の1919年が始まり。1954年までは、Armistice Dayで知られ、その後改名）
ざっと以上となりますが（記事よりコピペですみません。。）、改めまして、、今週末のMemorial Dayについては、”亡くなったVeterans”を想う日となるため、上記説明にあったように現役のVeteransに対して感謝をするVeterans Dayとも違って、より”厳粛に”サービスをした人達を想う日となる
と認識しておくと、Happy Memorial Day
の言い方についても心持ちが変わってくるかと思います
（例えば、、7月のIndependence Day（独立記念日）は単純にもっと”お祭り感”がありますが、Memorial Dayは”お祭り”ではない祝日と思っておくと、最低限の”マナー”として良いかもしれません。。）
