温暖化対策法案(Kerry-Boxer法案）を審議中の米議会上院向けに積極姿勢をアピールする目的で、オバマ大統領は10月27日、フロリダ州デソト次世代太陽エネルギーセンターを訪問。次世代エネルギー供給網「スマートグリッド」のため、34億ドルの投資を発表。今回のスマートグリッド投資は米国史上最大規模で、今春成立したAmerican Recovery and Reinvestment Act （米国再生・再投資法）の一環として行われるもの。
