What do EcoMotors and Seambiotic have in common?

September 14, 2009

Both the U.S.-based engine maker and an Israeli developer of marine microalgae announced new CEOs today.

Two early-stage, transportation-related cleantech companies, Khosla Ventures-backed EcoMotors and Ashkelon, Israel-based Seambiotic, appointed new CEOs today.

Troy, Mich.-based engine maker EcoMotors tapped Donald Runkle. Seambiotic, which is cultivating marine microalgae for biofuel uses, announced Daniel Chinn as its new leader.

EcoMotors is developing what it says are clean, efficient and lightweight propulsion systems (see Khosla-backed Coskata, EcoMotors come out of stealth).

Previously, Runkle served as the vice chairman and CTO of Delphi and also had a 31-year career with General Motors. Runkle replaces

The company’s primary piece of technology is the branded opoc (opposed piston opposed cylinder) engine, targeted for use in cars, light trucks, marine applications, agricultural vehicles and stationary generators.

Seambiotic's Chinn replaces the previous CEO. The company grows and processes marine microalgae for the nutraceutical and biofuel industries (see Seambiotic, NASA team up to optimize algae growth).

Chinn brings a law background and venture capital experience with Jerusalem-based Israel Seed Partners, as Seambiotic moves from pilot to commercial scale algae cultivation. The company’s pilot study has been taking place at an Israeli electric company’s power station near Ashkelon, involving microalgae cultivation using the station’s carbon dioxide emissions (see Inventure Chemical, Seambiotic in algae biofuel venture). The company says it has proven its model for microalgae cultivation, and has since been flooded with partnership and joint project requests.
