Tesla to sell electric cars in Europe

Tesla Motors plans to begin selling electriccars in Europe next year, taking advantage of the weak dollar.

Ze'ev Drori, chief executive of the US start-up, told the Financial Times that Tesla would start selling its Roadster sports car for just under €100,000 ($156,000), on the continent by the third quarter. It began production in the US last month.

"There are many compelling reasons for us to be in Europe," Mr Drori said. Alongside the weakening dollar, he cited the shorter average distance European motorists drive, and favourable tax treatment for electric or zero-emission vehicles in several countries.

Tesla would target "obvious" big markets such as Germany, France and the Netherlands, as well as countries such as Norway and Denmark, which offer generous tax incentives for low-emission cars. Tesla will not sell in the UK initially because it produces no right-hand-drive vehicles.

Electric cars account for a tiny proportion of world vehicle sales but are growing in importance as mainstream manufacturers join niche producers such as Tesla in exploiting demand from environmentally conscious drivers and new rules favouring greener cars.

Better Place
, another California-based start-up, said last week it had signed a letter of intent with DONG Energy, the Danish utility, to build recharging infrastructure in Denmark for electric cars to be produced by Renault.

Tesla's order book in the US stands at about 1,000, following delays in launching its car.

It will be producing about 100 cars a month by early next year. Its production for the European Union will initially be limited to 250 cars, according to Darryl Siry, the company's head of sales and marketing.

Tesla is being watched in automotive and environmental circles because of its pioneering status in commercial production of high-performance electric cars which, unlike hybrid petrol-electric cars, are powered by an electric motor only.

The company is seeking a US Department of Energy loan guarantee to build a manufacturing line in New Mexico or California to produce a lower-priced mass-market saloon.
