咄嗟の思いつき
Spur-of-the-moment idea

When diligently practicing the Buddhist path, there may be times when you suddenly come up with an idea in response to something you encounter.

In such moments, should the practitioner follow that sudden inspiration?

Although it is a subtle question, the general recommendation is to do so.

This is because it is generally safe to assume that anything a person diligently practicing the Buddhist path comes up with will serve as nourishment for their journey along the path.

In other words, it can be considered a manifestation of clear understanding.

In fact, when the conditions for enlightenment—an extremely important matter for a Buddhist practitioner—arise, the recognition of its mysteriousness and significance often feels like a sudden inspiration.

Specifically, when encountering a passage from a scripture or a principle that has a strong connection to you, when meeting a living Tathāgata or a wise teacher, or when hearing a rare phrase of the Dharma, it is not uncommon for a sudden inspiration to provoke a correct thought.

Similarly, this may occur when you are presented with an opportunity to accumulate merits.

Some people, in such moments, may accumulate significant merits and even attain Buddhahood swiftly.

However, of course, it would be foolish to blindly follow every sudden inspiration.

First, you should carefully examine it, and if you then develop a firm resolve, that is when you can consider it a true manifestation of clear understanding. Trust it, and proceed to act on it.
