深大寺の山門へ通じる階段を登り切ったところ 左手の奥まったところに ひっそりと 鎮座する切支丹灯篭を見つけました 仏教式合掌ではなく キリスト教式合掌をするマリア様か天使様のように見えます 仏教寺院に隠れキリシタンが礼拝した灯篭が持ち込まれ 大切にされていることに驚きました 異教を排除しない仏教の懐の深さに感服しました
At Jindaiji Temple precinct I happened to discover a garden lantern that used to be worshipped by persecuted Catholics during Edo period. Pious Catholics went underground and kept worshipping Christianity. They were called 'kakure kirishitan' or hidden Christians oppressed by the Tokugawa regime. They skillfully made statues, pagodas, and stone lanterns that resembled those of Buddhist style holy objects.
