The canvas for an Instagram Story is 1080 x 1920 pixels, a vertical 9:16 frame. Most blurry or cropped Stories come from a skipped check before export, not from the app itself. Here is a short list to run through before a file leaves your editor.

1. Check the shape, not just the numbers

Divide the width by the height. A 9:16 file gives 0.5625, whether it is 720 x 1280, 1080 x 1920 or 1440 x 2560. If you get 0.75, the file is 3:4; 0.8 means 4:5; 1.0 means square. None of those fill a Story without borders.

Watch for the most common mix-up: 16:9 is the horizontal TV and YouTube shape, 1920 x 1080. It has the right numbers in the wrong order and shows up in a Story as a small strip.

2. Export at 1080 x 1920, even from 4K footage

Shooting in 4K is fine. Exporting in 4K brings little benefit, according to guides that tested it: Pallyy says Instagram stores Stories at 1080 pixels wide and compresses wider files, and PostFast says a 4K upload can look worse after compression. Meta has not confirmed either claim. Export the final file as an H.264 MP4 at 1080 x 1920 so you control the scaling. Story ads are the exception: Meta recommends 1440 x 2560 pixels for them.

3. Keep text out of the bands

The profile picture, username and progress bar cover the top of the frame; the reply bar and buttons cover the bottom. Guides put the safe margin at about 250 pixels at the top and bottom. For ads, Meta gives percentages instead: 14% at the top, 35% at the bottom and 6% on each side. Instagram has not published an official safe zone for regular Stories, so treat 250 pixels as a working rule.

Polls, question boxes and link stickers need this most, since a covered sticker may be impossible to tap. Burned-in captions belong roughly 250 to 350 pixels above the bottom edge. The full instagram story size reference on the iGram blog compares the safe zone figures from each guide and from Meta in one table, next to minimum sizes and file limits.

4. Budget the reading time

A photo Story stays on screen for about 5 to 7 seconds, depending on which guide you read; Instagram has not published the number. A paragraph of text will not get read in that window. Split it across two or three frames.

5. Check the video length

Since September 2022, a video up to 60 seconds plays as one Story instead of being cut into clips. The 15-second limit in older guides is out of date.

6. Upload the original at the highest quality

Instagram's data and media settings include an "Upload at highest quality" option; the menu name varies by app version. Also post the file from your editor or camera roll, not a Story you saved back from Instagram, which goes through compression twice.

One last look

Open the preview in the Story editor before posting. The space the interface covers depends on the phone, the screen shape and the app version, so no margin guarantees that an element stays visible.
