子曰： “
君子不重則不威;学則不固。
主忠信；無友不如己者；過則勿憚改。”
子曰く、
君子、重からざれば、則ち威あらず、学べば即ち固ならず。
忠信を主とし、己に如かざる者を友とすること無かれ。
過てば即ち、改むるに憚ること勿れ。
忠信：まごころ。忠はこころの、信は言葉のまごころを表す。
The Master said, “
If a gentleman is not ponderous, he will not be majestic.
If he learns, he will not be stubborn.
He keeps wholehearted sincerity and truthfulness as his major principles
and does not befriend those beneath him.
When he makes a mistake, he is not afraid to correct it”
過則勿憚改 は日本人の殆んどが知っていることわざだ。
過てば即ち、改むるに憚ること勿れ

中国の言葉が、日本の隅々まで行きわたっていることも驚きだが、漢文をすっかり
自分のものにしている我々日本人にも驚きを覚える。たった４文字で表現する中国人、日本語英語とどんどん長くなるのをどう解釈すればよいのだろう。
