This is japanese traditional custom about Bean-Scattering Festival. Setsubun is held on the last day of winter. Setsubun is held on the day before the beginning of spring. On Setsubun day, we scatter(throw away) beans with saying “Oni ha soto, Fuku ha uchi=鬼は外、福は内”. “Oni ha soto, Fuku ha uchi” means “Devil out, Fortune in”. This is called “Mame-maki” in Japanese. “Mame” means beans, “maki” means scattering. People scatter beans to chase away devil from their house and bring in good luck to their house. People eat beans as numbers as their age. The reason why we eat beans is to pray for our happy and healthy life. And then, we eat “Ehoumaki” that is thick sushi roll on Setsubun. We face to the South-south-east direction to eat the fortune roll(Ehoumaki) in 2018. When we eat ”Ehoumaki”, we must face the year’s lucky direction called “Ehou”. Eat a whole Sushi Roll without stopping and speaking. You shouldn’t speak until you are finished with the sushi. It’s said that good fortune will be gone if you speak during eating the sushi.
