夏休み明け、久しぶりにDaniel のグループレッスンに行ってきま した。携帯の話が出て、As my mobile phone is "gara-kei", 「私の携帯は、いわゆるガラケーだから～」と言うと「それ何？」 と質問されました。皆であれこれ知っている範囲で説明しましたが、 ちゃんとわかってもらえません。
"Student Times"（通称ST）は 英字新聞 "The Japan Times" から出している学生向英字新聞です。家に帰ってから6/28付 「教えて日本のコト」というコラムに"What is gara-kei?" という 記事がを見つけました。

"Gara-kei" is an abbreviation of "Garapagos keitai denwa," which means "Galapagos mobile phone." The Garapagos Islands are a gorup of 19 islands located about 900km to the west of Ecuador in the Pacific Ocean. They are famous for many unique animals, which evolved independently because the islands are isolated from any other land. In Japan, the mobile phone industry developed independently, differently from international standards. In that way, Japanese mobile phoes are like the animals of the Galapagos Islands.
