この本当は文法ごとに両開きで英文が載っています。
左ページに日本語、そして右ページに英文です。
本当はこの例文を各80回音読して丸暗記することを推奨されています。また、現実に即した形にしてあるので省略形、
例えば Tokyo is → Tokyo's
のようになっています。
CDもついているので、発音確認もできて便利ですよね◎
で、この中にでてきた表現で疑問に思った表現があります。
「地味すぎる」
例えば、
▪️僕はあのネクタイは好きじゃないよ。僕には地味すぎるよ
I don't like that tie. It's too boring for me.
▪️このブラウスは私には派手すぎます。私は地味なのが欲しいんです。
This blouse's too tacky for me. I want a subdued one.
▪️これらはあなたには地味すぎます。
These're too conservative for you.
「地味」という形容詞はこの本の中だけでも3種類あります。
どのように使い分けているのかな？と思い、またもやHallo Talkで質問してみました◎
そしたら、このような回答が。
Conservative is used for clothes that do not reveal much skin.
なるほど、肌をあまり露出させない服ですね。保守的という意味ですね。
Whike boring is used for looks that do not catch your attention and are just plain.
はい。Boringは、あまり注目されない服とか単にシンプルな服につかう。
面白みがないという感じでしょうか。
ここで面白いのが
I've never used "subdued" to refer to person's attire.
イギリス人の女性が答えてくれたのですが、イギリスでは人の服装を形容する際にこの単語は使わないということでしょうか。人によって国によって違うとは思いますが。
そして、こう付け加えてくれました。
But, this word in that context makes me think of something that hasn't achieved its full potential.
少し読解できなかったのですが、この文脈でSubduedはその服自体の可能性に満たないというような印象がある、ということでしょうか。
Subdued だけなんだか良くわからなかったので、Weblioで調べたところ、
「抑制された、控えめな」という風に掲載されていました。このイギリス人女性が感じた、
It hasn't achieved its full potential という感じがよくわからないのですが、
まああまり使わない言葉なのかな、とも思うのでお得意の「そういうものだ」ということで一旦終了します。
これだけ調べたり、人に聞いたりすると、この単語と次にであったときに「あっ！また！」ときっとなるでしょう。いろんな方法で単語と出会い仲良くなっていきたいです。
