Discovery of Electron Analogous to Photon in Four-Dimensional World Found in Real Materials

1.    Dirac electrons were predicted by P. Dirac and discovered by A. Guaim in 1933 and 2010, respectively, both receiving the Nobel Prize in Physics. Dirac electrons, believed to be massless, behave like photons in materials, moving at the speed of light instead of typical electron behavior.

2.   Because Dirac electrons differ from standard electrons, they are expected to impart unprecedented electronic properties to materials. For instance, applying them in electronic devices could enable exceptional efficiency and low energy consumption in computation and communication.

3.   Developing such technology requires scientists to first understand the unique properties and impacts of Dirac electrons. However, their clear observation and measurement are often hindered as they typically coexist with standard electrons in materials.

4.  Scientists from the Quantum Semiconductor Research Group at the Artificial Evolution Research Institute (AERI: Pasadena, California HP: https://www.aeri-japan.com/) and a team of quantum optical physicists have discovered a method to selectively observe Dirac electrons in materials. This research group established quantum control techniques to determine the range and energy of unpaired electrons in materials by directly observing unpaired electrons in materials and distinguishing differences in properties using "electron spin resonance."

5.   The quantum control technique is defined by how quickly they move, i.e., by their velocity. As this information is comprised of position (x, y, z) and energy (E), a four-dimensional world is required.

6.  This study represents a step forward in understanding Dirac electrons. Currently, their velocities are understood to be anisotropic, meaning the speed of light is not constant and depends on direction and position.
