今日の英会話タイムで沖縄のお盆についての質問を受けました。
During the Eikaiwa Time today, I was asked about Obon in Okinawa.
沖縄でもお盆は本土と同じ日にちに行われるのか？
Is Obon in Okinawa held on the same dates as in mainland Japan?
実は、私、よく知らないのです。
Actually, I didn't really know.
私は沖縄の出身と言っても、父は奄美大島、母は宮古島の出身で、その二人が沖縄で出会って結婚し,姉と私は沖縄で生まれました。
I say I'm from Okinawa, but my father is from Amami Ooshima and my mother is from Miyako Island. They met and got married in Okinawa, and my older sister and I were born in Okinawa.
その後、私が2歳の時に父が東京へ転勤になり、妹二人は東京で生まれました。
When I was two years old, my father was transferred to Tokyo, and my two younger sisters were born in Tokyo.
そしてまた沖縄に戻り、弟が生まれました。
We then moved back to Okinawa again, and my younger brother was born there.
今日の英会話タイムでも話したのですが、奄美大島、沖縄本島、宮古島はそれぞれ違う言葉が話されていました。
As I told the people in the Eikaiwa Time, different languages were spoken in Amami Ooshima, Okinawa, and Miyako Island.
今では「方言」と呼んではいますが、はっきり言って異なる言語です。
They call them as dialects, but actually they are different languages.
父と母の共通の言葉は日本語の標準語だったので、私たちきょうだいも共通語しか知りませんし、沖縄の習慣や行事もあまり関係なく育ったというわけです。
The common language between my father and mother was Japanese; therefore, my siblings and I know Japanese but none of the other three languages. We also grew up without learning much about traditional customs and events of any of the three islands.
３つの言語がどれくらい違うかと言うと、
To show you how those three languages are different...
例えば「ありがとう」は
For example, "Thank you" is...
沖縄 → ニヘーデービル
宮古 → タンディガータンディ
奄美 → アリガッサマリョータ
全然違いますね～
They are so different.
一方、似ている言葉もあります。しかも中国語にも似ています。
On the other hand, there are some words that are similar.
「猫」
Cat
沖縄 → マヤ
宮古 → マユ
奄美 → マオ
中国語 → mao
面白いですねー
Interesting, isn't it?
あ、ちなみに沖縄のお盆ですが、旧盆に行うようで、今年は8月の22日～24日にあたるそうです。
Oh, by the way, Obon in Okinawa is based on the lunar calendar, and it will be from August 22nd to 24th this year.
