Concrete's used in kitchens and bathrooms might be considered fairly 'contemporary' design-wise by some homeowners. But while cement can be used to create a modern or minimum look, it is also perfectly convenient to a more traditional environment - where it was so extensively used in the first place.
Concrete could become a substitute for more old-fashioned products. Instead of just using cement to clearly re-create anything from the past, you can also mix it with other elements to suggest an eternal quality. Within my work, I always strive to strike a balance between emotion and innovation, between spare contemporary and warm old-fashioned. Putting mosaic tile along the top side of a real floor, inlaying items of tile along a backsplash, or even embedding a guess in a counter-top all join us to the past.
A California pad we recently renovated moved from 'traditional' to 'transitional.' A large real curved wall and table strongly separates the living-room from the kitchen. Meanwhile, a stainless-steel essential sink countertop straddles one wall- yet, by inlaying glass tiles to the backsplash and applying a conventional plate holder inside the cabinetry, enough balance is reached to prevent a conflict of styles.
Let us take a turn-of-century 'Craftsman' type kitchen to get a hypothetical example. The units would probably be frame-and-panel with flush inlay doorframes. There will be wood wainscoting in-the dining area and perhaps tile around just one porcelain sink. The lighting fixtures may have beveled glass or echoes of Tiffany lamps. What concrete ap-plication could be correct in this situation? I'd look into more than one of the following some ideas in combination:
- Choose an earth tone color or natural grey. No bright colors.
- Keep the front face, or depth, of the counter at the very least of 2-1/2' up-to 5.'
- Inset 'panels' in to the top face of the counter to reflect the cabinet doors. These systems would be no further than 3/8' and would measure roughly 1/3' for the top of the leading face, or
- Recess the accordingly sized or proportioned ceramic tiles with some embossing to them into the face of the counter-top or into a cast backsplash.
Enable the recess to be at-least 1/4' thorough.
- Mosaic tiles in sets of four separated by 1/8'-1/4' space may be placed on the counter surface as mounted 'trivets' next to the oven burners. (Within the shape, they would be placed face down on the bottom of the form.)

Now I'd not want to use all the above features - just enough to transport a complementary quality to the Craftsman look and feel. The cement it-self is natural enough to hold that load.
