先週のブログでは、スラングの”ACE”についてご紹介しました今が受験シーズンなので、たくさんの方が試験を受けられていますよねみなさんが素晴らしい結果を出せていればいいなと思います

では、今日のトピックにいきましょう今週ご紹介したいのは、句動詞のTurn upとTurn downです

きっとみなさん、一番よく使われるTurn upとTurn downの意味は知っているんじゃないでしょうかそうです何かの強弱をつける時やボリュームを上げ下げする時に使います例えば、

“Please turn down the music! I’m trying to study!!”

－音楽のボリュームを下げて勉強しようとしてるんだから

これらの句動詞は、音楽のボリュームを上げ下げすることに加えて、ヒーターやエアコンを強めたり弱めたりする時にも使えます

“It’s really hot in here!Could you turn up the AC?”

－こことっても暑いねエアコンを強くしてくれない？

ところで、Turn upとTurn downにはこんな使い方もあるって知っていましたか？

１）Turn down = 断る

もしもあなたが何かに招待されたり、何かのオファーを受けて、それを断るとしますよねそんな時にTurn downが使えるのです例えば、

“I turned down the job because the salary wasn’t very good.”

－その仕事断ったんだよねだって給料がそんなに良くなかったから

Turn downは、仕事のオファー、パーティーや結婚式への招待、デートなどを断る時に使えるんですよ

２）Turn up = 急に現れる

Turn upは人に対してこんな風に使えます

“I was angry when my ex-boyfriend turned up at my house last week.”

－先週、元カレが急に私の家に来たからとっても腹がたった（腹が立ったというより、怖いですね(笑)）

また、動物や、前に失くしてしまっていたものが出てきた時にはこんな風に使えます

“After I spent three hours looking for my textbook, it finally turned up under my bed!”

－３時間も探し回った教科書が、ベッドの下からやっと出てきた

これらの句動詞はとっても便利なので是非使ってみて下さいね言語習得の一番の近道は使うことですよ

Probably you have already heard the first definition of turn up and turn downThey mean “to increase in strength or
volume,” for example:

“Please turn down the music!I’m trying to study!!”

In addition to turning up and turning down music, you can also use these phrasal verbs with heat and air conditioning:

“It’s really hot in hereCould you turn up the AC?”

However, did you know these other two uses of turn up and turn down?

1) Turn down = refuse

If you receive an invitation or an offer, and you say “no”, you are turning it downFor example:

“I turned down the job because the salary wasn’t very good”

You can use turn down for refusals of job offers, opportunities, invitations to parties, dates, weddings, etc

2) Turn up = appear suddenly

You can use turn up for people like:

“I was angry when my ex-boyfriend turned up at my house last week”

or for animals or objects that had previously been lost:

“After I spent three hours looking for my textbook, it finally turned up under my bed”

These are very useful phrasal verbs so let’s use itThe shortest way to learn languages is to use it
