外国語を学ぶ上で、リスニング力、つまり“聴く耳”を鍛えることは、重要な要素のひとつです
リスニング力がよく発達していれば、脳はその言語を吸収し、しっかり記憶することが出来ます
つまり、優れたリスニング力は、私たちがその言語を覚え、最終的に理解し、話す為にはとても重要だということです
ABCDavid’s英語スクールでは、小さい頃から優れたリスニング力を発達させる手助けをすることに重点を置いています
3歳～5歳くらいの小さい子供たちは、同じアクティビティを繰り返したり、本を読んだり、好きな歌を聴いて歌ったりすることで、たいていすぐにリスニング力が上達します
しかし、大きくなるにつれて、外国語の音を聞き分けることが少し難しくなっていきます
ですが、子供たちが興味を持つアクティビティをすることで、この壁も素晴らしい成果と共に越えられるのです
さて今回は、中学生のクラスをご紹介させていただこうと思いますこのクラスでは、本、チャンツ、フラッシュカード等、多様な教材を使っています
また、私たちは、グループ、ペア、または個々で課題に取り組むといったように、多様なテクニックを使って教えています
そして、みんなの前で英語を話すということが、毎回のクラスで必要となってきますそのことは、生徒たちに英語をマスターし、上手にコミュニケーションを取れる人になる為の自信を与えてくれるのです
私たちが中学生の生徒たちに対してしている主な事柄の一が、彼らのレベルに合ったものを探し、使うことです
中学生の子供たちが興味のあるものを探し、そして、それをレッスンに取り入れることで、レッスンがさらに面白いものになり、勉強をしているとは感じず楽しみながら学べるのです
“聴く耳”を発達させる為に、私たちは音楽を使っています今回は、アナと雪の女王の“Let It Go”を使いました
この曲は今、日本でとても人気で、至るところで子供たちが日本語でも英語でも歌っているのを耳にしますよね
そこで、この曲の歌詞を、何小節かずつに切り分けてパズルのようにしました
そして、歌詞がだいたいわかるくらいまで、生徒たちにこの曲を聞かせましただいたい5、6回は聞かせました
その後、生徒たちはグループとなり、耳で聞いたことだけを使って正しいフレーズを探し、文章を組み立てて、歌詞を完成させていきます最初は少し難しかったようですが、それもまた良かったようですなぜなら、この年齢の子供たちは挑戦するのが大好きで、競争するのも大好きなので、常に全力で取り組めていました
数回このアクティビティを続ければ、子供たちは歌詞を完成させるのがとても速くなりますそうなれば、クラスを少人数のグループ、またはペアに分けることによってレベルを上げ、時間を計っていきます
レッスンの中で、楽しく革新的なアクティビティを用いることによって、子供たちにもっと上手になりたいと思わせることが出来、彼らが英語を学ぶ過程で必要な能力を発達させる為の手助けも出来るのです
One of the
major factors in learning a foreign language is to develop a good listening
skill or in other words “listening ear”When listening skill is well developed
the brain is able to absorb the language and store it in the back memory thus
giving us better chances to remember the language and ultimately to understand
and speak the language
At ABCDavid’s
English school we put a lot of emphases on helping students to develop good
listening skills starting from the youngest age
Younger children, 3-5 years
old, usually develop that skill faster with repetition activities, reading
books, and listening and singing their favorite English songsHowever, the
older we get it’s a little harder for us to catch the sounds of the foreign
language
But with the set of interesting activities this challenge can be
accomplished with great results
Today I want
to talk about our junior high school class. In this class we use many different
types of educational materials like books, chants, flash cards and etc
We
teach by using different techniques like working in groups, pairs and
individuallySpeaking in front of the class is required during every class
This gives the students the confidence they need to conquer the language and
become better communicators
One of the
main things I do with my students is finding and utilizing more things that are
age appropriate for junior high school levelI try to understand what children
of their age are interested in and I bring that into the classroom thus making
the class more fun, where it does not feel like studying but having fun while
learning
To develop
the “listening ear” I use music in the classroom This time I used the “ Let It
Go” song from the movie FrozenIt is very popular in Japan and you can hear
kids everywhere singing it in Japanese and English languages
I take the song
lyrics and pre-cut them into the short phrases making sort of like a word
puzzleThen, I let students listen to the song as many times as they need to
start understanding the lyricsThis usually takes 5 or 6 triesAfter that
they work together as a group trying to find the right phrases and make
sentences out of them and put the lyrics together by using only their earIn
the beginning it is a little challenging for the kids but it’s a good thing
because at this age kids love challenges and love competition so they put forth
their effort at all times
After several lessons doing this exercise the
students become much better and much faster with putting the song lyrics
togetherWhen that happens I increase the level of difficulty by dividing the
class into small groups or pairs and also timing them
Using fun
and innovative activities in the class makes children want to do better and
helps them develop the necessary skills they need to progress in their quest of
learning English language
