Habit 3: Read Above Your Level - The Growth Zone Strategy
Most English learners choose perfectly comfortable books—every word familiar, every sentence easy.
And they wonder why their English hasn't improved after months of reading.
Here's the truth: comfortable reading doesn't create growth. It creates repetition.
The Sweet Spot: 90-95% Comprehension
Like physical exercise, your brain grows when slightly challenged beyond its current capacity.
You should understand 90-95% of what you read:
- The main story makes sense
- Most sentences are clear
- You can guess unknown words from context
- Some words and phrases are new
That 5-10% you don't understand? That's your growth zone.
What This Feels Like
Too easy (100%): No pausing, no learning
Just right (90-95%): Engaged, occasionally guessing, growing
Too hard (below 85%): Constantly stopping, frustrated, quitting
What to Read
Beginners: Graded readers, simple news, English Connect 365+ Stories
Intermediate: Young adult novels, newspapers, English Connect 365+ Topics
Advanced: Contemporary novels, long-form journalism, English Connect 365+ Prominent People
Pick topics you genuinely care about. Interest beats "perfect level" every time.
The "Don't Stop" Rule
Circle unknown words but keep reading. Only look up words that:
- Appear multiple times
- Block paragraph understanding
- You're genuinely curious about
Trust your brain to learn from context.
Your Challenge
Find ONE book slightly above your comfort level.
Read 15 minutes daily for one week. Circle unknowns, but don't stop.
Choose growth. Choose the 90-95% zone.
Happy learning!
