You're spot on with your comment about how J.C. Penney "used to be a solid company." I grew up with and "in" J.C,Ping K15 Hybrid. Penney. That was all my mother would buy us as kids. My first suit was from Penney's - and decades later, I remain loyal to Penney's - as I buy all of my "underclothes" there . Theirs was the only brand that would hold up to the high heat of the ship's laundry. All of my work Khaki's were Penney branded - as they too held up to the heat and they released stains better than what the Navy Exchange sold,Ping G20 irons. Now that I'm retired - I buy very little from Penney's. I still buy "Stafford" line of undershorts and undershirts - they're hard to beat when it comes to quality and wear. This is one of the very few brands that I remain loyal to - as no other brand holds a candle to the "Penney/Stafford" quality. But, they too are starting to "shave" a few cents here and there - but not in a way that reduces the "wearability" of the garmet. A few years back, they went to an "imprinted" waist-size label that indicated both the company name and branding as well as the size - but I can live with that - as the quality is still there,TaylorMade Burner SuperFast 2.0 Rescue Hybrids. But, I hear that "knocking" that makes me wonder - what are they going to screw with next? BTW - great post ! ! !
