As the mother of a 6-year-old disabled son, this makes me sick. We knew there was a chance of our son being exploited or abused in the workforce - we had a conversation about it last week, before we knew about this story. I told my husband that the only way we could be sure that our son is treated well and paid well is to open our own business and employ him ourselves.
Has everyone defending this practice done the math? 22 cents an hour... $8.80 for a 40 hour work week, and I'm sure many of these people don't work 40 hours if they are that profoundly affected. $457.60 for an entire year's work at 40 hours a week. How is that not exploitation? I'm sure that the CEO of Goodwill has spent more on a meal at a nice restaurant than they pay some of their employees in a year. They give people the privilege of working for them...
