Lesson 46 控えめな過去の助動詞
could､ wouldなど過去形の助動詞は過去を表すだけではない。過去のもつ遠く離れた感触､距離感から生じている使い方。
DIALOGUE
会社の同僚､アダムとジュリアが故障したプリンターを前にどうすればいいのか話し合っている。
Adam: Ah, what's wrong with this printer?
Julia: I don't know. There is an error message.
Adam: I can see that. I need to print out 30 copies of this report by noon!
Julia: I can call the service company.
Adam: Mmm, that will take too long. I need someone who can fix it right now!
Julia: Hmm. Oh. David could fix it, I think. He is good with machines.
Adam: Well, let's call him.

Onishi: Chris and Rosa, does "could" here mean "He was able to fix it in the past"?
Rosa: Not at all!

こうした使い方は過去形のもつ距離感から生まれている。遠くに退いている､という感覚。
助動詞はどういった意味でも過去形にすることによって意味の強さを減じることができる。

ヒント: かもしれない may: 「ひょとして～かもしれないなあ」なので弱める

解説: mayなら「～かもしれない」50パーセントの推量。mightになると「ひょとして～かもしれない」可能性が下がって30パーセント程度の可能性
まとめ
控えめな助動詞はおとなの英語にとっては非常に重要な表現となっている。
Onishi: Chris and Rosa, this use of "could", "would", "might" that we learned today is very essential in conversation especially for adults, right?
Rosa: Indeed. It is.
Chris: Yeah. I mean, as we grow older we realize that the world is not black and white, right? Has lots of grey areas. So these words "could", would", might" help us add that those nuances to our English expression.
Rosa: And it's also much better if we as adults can kind of add cushions when we say something.
Chris; Softeners, right?
Rosa: Yeah, softeners. So we don't hurt the other person’s feelings or put pressure. And it helps for a much more harmonious interaction.
Chris: Exactly. That's a nice word "harmonious". I like it.
Rosa: I like it too.
おとなにとって世界はblack and white白か黒かにきれいに割り切れる世界ではない。グレーゾーンの出来事というのがかなりある。そこでこの控えめ表現が生きている。そして控えめな表現を使うことによって､直接的ではなくクッションのように相手への発言をソフトにしてくれる効果もある。こういう表現をしかっりと使うことによって私たちは､周りの人たちとハーモニーに生きることができる。
