Rosa: Hey, everyone. This is Rosa Akino. Let's start the new week with a bang.

Chris: Hi, everyone. I'm Chris Mcvay. So Rosa, you want to start with a bang this week, huh? Sounds like a good idea. Let's do it!

with a bang 華々しく/勢いよく(「英辞郎 on the WEB」より)

Lesson 16 授与型

S+V+O+O型。動詞の後ろに名詞を2つ従えた形。常に「あげる/くれる」という意味を表す。どういった動詞を使おうとそれは変わらない。

DIALOGUE

授業が終わってクラスメイトのケンとミホが話をしている

Ken: I really enjoyed today's English conversation class. How about you, Miho?

Miho: I enjoyed it, too. Today's class was fun. Our teacher is great.

Ken: But he always gives us so much homework.

Miho: Why don't we work on it together this weekend?

Ken: That's a great idea! But I need to check my schedule. Can you give me your phone number?

Miho: Sure. Here you are.

Ken: Thanks. I'll call you later.

Miho: Okay. Bye.

[give me your phone numberの感覚]

Onishi: Chris, what kind of feeling do you have when you use a give construction?

Chris: Well, I think the most important thing to bear in mind is that as soon as a native speaker wants to express a give-type situation, the same pattern comes out automatically like *** 1-2-3. Do you think so, Rosa?

Rosa: I'll give you an example.

Chris: Ah! Very good! Thank you for giving me an example, okay?

ネイティブスピーカーがgiveタイプのシチュエーションに遭遇して、それを文にするときには、必ず同じリズム、1-2-3というgive + 名詞 + 名詞というというそのリズムが生まれる

REAL GRAMMAR FOR COMMUNICATION

[Key sentence}

Can you give me your phone number?

型は文の意味を支配する。この型で使われる限り、どういった動詞が使われようが必ず授与の意味となる。

ANOTHER EXPRESSION

Let me show you some family photos.

I'll buy you a T shirt.

REPEAT

Can you give me your phone number?

Let me show you some family photos.

I'll buy you a T shirt.

ゴガクルの解説より:「この文は「授与型」。授与型は「あげる・くれる」を表します。動詞の後ろに目的語を2つ並べます。目的語の順序に気をつけましょう。最初の目的語は「~に」。授与の受けての位置。次の目的語は与えられるもの。英語は「配置のことば」。順序を変えると意味は通じません。」http://gogakuru.com/english/phrase/104619

GRAMMAR IN ACTION

日本語: 僕のガールフレンドは、僕の誕生日に美しい詩を書いてくれました。

write「書く」という動詞を授与型を使って

解答例: My girlfriend wrote me a beautiful poem for my birthday.

目的語mea beautiful poemを2つ並べる「私に美しい詩を書いてくれる/あげる」

日本語: そのメールをもう一度僕に読んでくれない?

readを授与型で

解答例: Read me that email again, will you?

[, will you?]のニュアンス

Onishi: We have "will you?" at the end of the sentence.

Chris: That's right.

Onishi: Yeah, yeah. What is a nuance of this one?

Chris: Yeah, this is often used actually to soften a sentence. I mean, if you say, "Read me that email again", it's a bit harsh, right? So just to soften it, "Read me that email again, will you"? and it's like giving the other person the choice.

"Read me that email again"と言ってしまうと、命令文に聞こえ、しかも硬い感じに聞こえてしまうので、こうしたことを柔らかく伝えるためにwill you?を最後につけることによって、「~してくれない?」という柔らかささが出てくる。そして疑問文なので、相手に受け入れる/断るのチョイスを与えることにもつながる。

日本語: 何か飲み物を持ってきましょうか?

解答例: Can I get you something to drink?

getは動きを表す動詞。授与型と使われて、「あなたに何かを持ってきてあげる」という動き。動いて「あげる」という意味を作ることができる

Onishi: Chris, is it okay to use "bring" here?

Chris: Yeah. "Bring" just means from another place back to where the person is. So there's no problem.

bringももちろん使って構わない。

まとめ

文型が決まれば文の意味が決まる。ネイティブは、話すときまずある状況をある文型として把握する。そしてその文型の示す設計図通りに単語を置いていく感じで文を作っている。

Onishi: Chris, it seems tough question. Anyway, how do you create a sentence? Can you explain the process with?

Chris: It doesn't seem a tough question. It IS a tough question. But I think as I mentioned in the last a few lesson, a native speaker depending on the type of situation he wants to use automatically some pattern comes into their head, Right? So we focus on the pattern, like in this lesson, A-B-C, 1-2-3. So somehow you as learners, I think it's important for you to find a way to get these patterns fixed into your head, and then little by little, they'll come out naturally just like a native speaker.

Rosa: Yeah. Like you said, each pattern has slots and the slots change according to what you want to say.

ネイティブスピーカーが文を作るときには、何か状況に出会ったときに、頭の中にある文パターン=文型が頭の中にひらめく。そしてこの文型にそって文を作っていく。

最後の↑は、内容が重複したような形になっていますが、クリスさんの解説を大西先生が説明したものです。

あと、最後にローザさんが言われたslotとは、「溝」
