3月1日、福山に到着しました。お天気にめぐまれて、25km歩き通しました。歩き始めて
から今日でもう1週間ちかくになりますが、足の痛みに悩まされることもなく、今回の
ウォークの目的に気持ちを集中することができています。
福山に到着すると、まず商店街に入り、パレードし、現地の9条の会の方々と合流しました。
そして、アメリカから参加しているヒップホップグループ、Foundation Movementの舞台が
注目を集め、なかには地方の新聞記者も来ていました。それから、私は、戦争の恐ろしさに
ついて、イラクで従軍した経験から話しました。とても強烈なその経験は、いまもなお
私を苦しめます。つづいて、ベトナム帰還兵のアレン・ミラーさんも、世界における、あるいは
日本における9条の重要性について伝えました。今夜もお寺に泊めて頂くことになっています。

Today March 1st. We arrived in Fukuyama, Japan. We walked a long way 25 km,
with good weather, sun and little clouds. We have been walking for almost
a week now and we are now able to concentrate on the purpose of this walk
and not just the aches and pains of walking long distances. When we
arrived in Fukuyama we walked to the main shopping area where we were greeted
by many of the local Article nine peace activists. With the help of stilt
walkers the American Hip-Hop group Foundation Movement drew a large crowd
and reporters from the regional newspapers. I gave a short speech about
the horrors of war that I have personally seen or partaken in, things that
still scare me today. Vietnam Veteran Allen Miller talked about the
importance of Article nine in the world and Japan. Tonight we stay at one
of many supporters temples, where they gratiously fed us. We are truly
blessed.
