10 members of a high profile environmental group in Cambodia have been found guilty of plotting against the government.

The court in Phnom Penh also said that 3 members of the group Mother Nature had insulted the country’s king.

Celia Hutton reports: Dressed in white, 4 members of the environmental group Mother Nature were arrested outside the court in Phnom Penh as soon as the verdict was issued.

All ten members received sentences of between 6 and 8 years thought the group’s founder, Alejandro Gonzalez-Davidson was sentenced in absentia.

A Spanish national, he was deported almost a decade ago.

This prosecution is being seen as the latest attempt by the Cambodian authorities to exert power over the country’s shrinking civil sector.
