A British boy with severe epilepsy has become the first patient in the world to take part in the trial of a new device fitted in the skull to control seizures.

Oran Knowlson was having multiple seizures a day.

Here’s our medical editor, Fergus Walsh: Surgeons at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London inserted two electrodes deep into Oran’s brain.

These were connected to a small neurostimulator placed in a gap cut out of his skull.

The rechargeable device provides a constant low-level stimulus, designed to block the uncontrolled  burst of electrical activity which triggered Oran’s seizures.

Seven months after the device with switched on, his daytime seizures have reduced by 80%.
