New immigration laws have taken effect in Japan making it easier to deport asylum seekers whose application has failed.

Japan has traditionally been reluctant to accept migrants having granted refugee status to just over 300 people last year.

Here’s Shaim Harrel: Those who have submitted 3 or more asylum applications are now at risk of deportation under Japan’s revised immigration control and refugee recognition act.

If they failed to present reasonable grounds to support their case to stay, previously Japan could not deport foreign national whose application for refugee status was being processed.

But the changes were made as the authorities believe the system was being abused by those making repeated claims to remain in the country.

The revised registration faced pushback from opponents who argued it could result in the repatriation of people who are at risk of prosecution in their home countries.
