9 Egyptian men have gone on trial in Greece accused of causing the biggest migrant shipwreck (難破船) in the Mediterranean for a decade.

Rights groups have raised concerns over the case.

The controversy centered on (集中する) why the boat sank.

Survivors have said it went down after a failed attempt by the Greek Coast Guard to tow it.

Nick Beak reports: The nine men on trial faced life in prison if convicted of people smuggling and causing a shipwreck.

The Greek prosecution’s case directly contradict (矛盾する) the Greek Coast Guard’s highly contentious (議論のある) claim from last summer that the boat was safe and so not in need of rescue.

At least 6 survivors have since told the BBC the Coast Guard themselves capsized the boat in a botched (下手にやる) effort to tow it.

The Greek Coast Guard has repeatedly deny that it caused the migrant boat to sink interfered with witnesses (目撃者) or attempted a  cover-up (もみ消し)
