William Lai has urged China to stop its political and military threat against Taiwan after being sworn in as the new President.

In his inaugural (就任の) speech he said Taiwan would make no concessions on its freedom.

Rupert Wingfield-Hayes is in Taipei: President Willian Lai said he would not do anything to change Taiwan’s status quo but also would not back down (手を引く) in the face of military intimidation by China.

He described the grey zone warfare being used against Taiwan as a challenge to global peace and called on Beijing to replace aggression with dialogue.

At the same time he said people on the island must not be under any illusion about the threat from China and that Taiwan must further strengthen its own defenses.
