Police in Nigeria say they detained the governor of the country’s central bank on Friday. Nigeria’s new president Bora Tinuba  announced that he suspended the governor Godwin Emefiele with immediate effect and planned reform of financial sector. 

 

Richard Hamilton reports: Although the details of this investigation have not been disclosed,  Mr Emefiele’s removal was not unexpected. 

 

His term as governor of the central bank was marked by two disastrous and unorthodox moves withdrawing naira notes from circulation causing a currency crisis and an unwise double inter-party politics. 

 

The currency crisis came about when the central bank withdrew large denominations of naira notes and tried to force Nigerian to use a new digital currency.
