Nick Marsh reports: Ahead of his trip Lord Dominic Johnson’s said that the UK wouldn’t duck (責任を逃れる、回避する) its historic responsibilities to the people of Hong Kong and would continue to call out violations of their freedoms.
But in reality that’s not why he’s there, he’s in Hong Kong to do business looking to attract investments and cooperation from the city mainly in the are of financial services and technology.
It’s the reflection of UK government position that leans more recently toward engagement with China despite its harsh crackdowns on civil liberties in the former British colony over the past three years.
