Thailand’s constitutional court has suspended the Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha while it considered a legal challenge that claim he’s reached his term limit.
Jonathan Head reports from Bangkok: After leading the 13th successful military coup in Thailand’s modern history, General Prayuth Chan-ocha did as his predecessors had done and had a new constitution drafted, one designed to help extend his rule beyond the restoration of democracy.
But the drafters appear to have overlooked the implications of a new clause in the charter barring any prime minister from serving more than 8 years in office.
Opposition parties say he’s now reached his 8-year limit and they last(have asked) the constitutional court to judicate(adjudicate).
The court has ordered General Prayuth suspended while it does that. with his duties taken over by deputy prime minister.

タイの憲法裁判所はプラユット首相を停職処分とし、首相任期の上限に達しているとの訴えへの審査を考慮している。
タイの近代史上13回目の軍事クーデターを率いて、先駆者たちがやったようにやり、新憲法を起草させた。
その憲法は民主主義の回復よりも自らの統治の延命を助けるように企てられていた。
しかし起草者たちは、首相は8年以上その地位にあってはいけないとの条項を見落としていたようだ。
野党はプラユット首相は8年の任期上限に達しているとして憲法裁判所に判決を下すように要求している。
裁判所はプラユット首相を停職とし、副首相に職務を引き継がせた。
任期を伸ばして国王のような振る舞いを試みる隣国とは一線を画しているのか、それとも側近の法学者がマヌケなのか。
