The British Government is to present proposals to parliament today that would override the power of European Court of Human Rights.
The Bill of Rights enables the government to ignore injunctions from the court in Strasbourg in France such as its decision to block Britain’s plan to send asylum seekers to Rwanda.
Dominic Casciani reports: Most of this package was first unveiled last December including plans to restrict foreign offenders using family life under the Human Rights Act to avoid deportation.
There’re also new rules for judges telling them to put British laws before judgement from European Court of Human Rights,
if the two are in dispute, although they can in theory do that already.
Critics say the proposal will make it harder for people to take human right claims to courts in the UK,
placing too much power in the hands of ministers.
